The Absence of Color, the latest exhibit from Haitian-American Abstract Expressionist Sophia Domeville, discusses race and identity in America. The fundamentals of her work derive from her experiences in her life, her self-perception of society as a Haitian woman, and her discovery of true self. It also looks at the disparity in identity placed on others by society and Ms. Domeville breaking through the glass ceiling within higher institutions as an Artist.

Straying from her well known usage of bold colors and large canvases, Haitian-American artist Sophia Domeville takes a more minimalist approach to her discussion of racial injustice. Ms. Domeville also redefine the usage of mixed media and color through portraiture during her discussion of racial identity.

This exhibition is an uninhibited expression using a combination of found materials, mixed media and wood work. She reconstructs the question “What is Art?” by first deconstructing the common use of canvas and other traditional materials.

Her play with space, line, lighting and texture creates a world filled with raw emotion, underlining layers of self-doubt and anxiety, creating an unspoken dialogue between artist and viewer.”

This will be the 2 year anniversary celebration of Haitian American Artist Sophia Domeville pursing her passion within the arts!

As an artist, Sophia has exhibited her work in Columbia University, Dartmouth College, John Jay College, City College, Liberty Theater, Gallerie LaKaye in West Hollywood, SOMArts Gallery in San Francisco, The Aaron Davis Gallery in Harlem, Center Stage in Newark and more!

Currently Ms. Domeville is as a part of an artist collective, “Essential Elements Creative Collective” for Gallery Aferro 2014 studio residency program in Newark.

We are excited to announce Haitian American Artist, Sophia Domeville feature and interview with Face2Face Africa!

Ms. Domeville was chosen as a young female entrepreneur and artist that embody the stories of perseverance, progress, and empowerment in a new series called “Faces You Should Know”.

“I fought for my creativity since I was 5 years old,” Ms. Domeville passionately exclaims. Inspired by African-American artist Kara Walker, Ms. Domeville communicates powerful messages with emotionally driven colors, minimalist techniques, and powerful brush strokes.

To celebrate Women’s History month, Ms. Domeville centered her art workshop around self esteem and instructed the young girls to paint self portraits of themselves discussing the idea of beauty through art.

Special thank you to the East Kings County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. for their immense support, opportunity and excitement as Ms. Domeville worked with their girls.

She has partnered up with the I Have A Dream Foundation of Newark “Dreamers” scholarship program where for the next 12 weeks, Ms. Domeville will be teaching students from various schools (North Star Academy, Great Oaks, WLK & more) as well as college aged students(NJIT, Rutgers & Essex County College) about the power of art within the community of Newark!

Currently Ms. Domeville and her team are filming a documentary about the making of The Dreamers Project discussing the power of Art within the community and schools.

This past Tuesday,
Haitian American Artist Sophia Domeville attended, “Cocktails for Haiti, a fundraiser held by ArtistsActivists.Org at Skylark in Manhattan to benefit the construction of the Diakonos International Orphanage of Kominote Ti Fanmi Nou (meaning Our Small Community of Family) in Carrefour, Haiti.

This is a very important project because it benefits the children of Diakonos International orphanage and could possibly be a permanent location in running the organization amazing art program Art Day Celebration where last year Ms. Domeville was one of their lead teaching artist.
